Description
This engaging, interactive course equips students with the confidence to understand and exercise their rights to freedom of speech and academic freedom within a university setting - while recognising the boundaries of lawful expression and the importance of respectful engagement.
Learners explore when speech is protected and when it crosses into harassment, understand their university's responsibilities under Condition E6, and learn how to navigate difficult conversations, protest, and controversial topics in a way that supports inclusion and free expression.
Course Objectives
- Understand what freedom of speech and academic freedom mean in a higher education context.
- Recognise the legal protections for free speech under the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act 2023.
- Identify when lawful expression may cause offence - and when it may cross the line into harassment.
- Explore how to engage in disagreement respectfully and constructively.
- Understand students' rights and responsibilities under Condition E6.
- Understand how learning providers balance protecting free expression while ensuring student safety and compliance with harassment protections.
