VinciWorks has released a new HIPAA course, to train learners about HIPAA and related federal legislation.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) defines health information as any information (including genetic information) created or received by a healthcare provider, health plan, public health authority, employer, life insurance company, school or university, or healthcare clearinghouse AND relates to a person’s:
- Past, present or future physical or mental health or condition
- Past, present or future payment for healthcare
Health information can exist in any form, including paper, electronic or oral information.
When a covered entity creates or receives health information that identifies – or can be used to identify – a person, it is known as individually identifiable health information (IIHI).
This includes demographic or other personal data that can identify a person, such as their name, address, date of birth or social security number.
It is important to understand HIPAA requirements as both a patient and a covered entity.
Our new HIPAA course is designed for anyone required to understand the rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the US healthcare system.
In the course, learners will learn about HIPAA and related federal legislation, and the elements of HIPAA they need to comply with, including the Privacy, Security and Enforcement and Breach notification rules. They will also learn about the different types of health data that HIPAA covers, who is covered, and the elements of an effective compliance program.
This course is divided into 10 units which cover a full program for HIPAA compliance.
What’s in the course?
The course covers:
- What is HIPAA and what does it cover?
- Who needs to comply with the Act?
- What are considered covered entities and non-covered entities?
- How does HIPAA affect different roles and industries such as marketing and fundraising?
- How must breaches be reported and who needs to be notified?
- What are the penalties for lack of compliance with HIPAA?
The course can be customised to include your organization’s policies and procedures, the compliance contact’s details, or it can include a custom-built module.
