In the lead-up to World AIDS Day on December 1, VinciWorks proudly announces the release of the HIV in the workplace guide, a comprehensive resource for employers striving to create inclusive, supportive workplaces for employees living with or affected by HIV. Developed in collaboration with Mark Mills, an HR professional and HIV advocate, this guide draws on best practice insights from surveys with professionals living with HIV. It aims to challenge stigma, promote understanding, and outline practical steps employers can take to foster an inclusive environment for everyone with a non-visible disability.
While advances in HIV treatment have transformed the virus into a manageable chronic condition, stigma and discrimination remain pervasive barriers. Despite legal protections under acts like the UK’s Equality Act 2010 and many other national discrimination laws around the world, three-quarters of people living with HIV report experiencing stigma, with a third facing workplace discrimination. The guide emphasises that employers have a critical role in dismantling these barriers. From practical information about HIV transmission—reinforcing that the virus is not spread through casual contact—to highlighting the realities of modern treatments like antiretroviral therapy (ART), the guide equips employers with the tools to debunk myths and provide informed support.
Why employers should take action
This new guide underscores that a supportive workplace significantly impacts employee well-being and performance. Many employers might not be aware their employees are living with HIV, but are protected from discrimination whether they share that or not. Key recommendations for employers include:
- Policy development: Consider how people with non-visible disabilities will feel supported in the workplace and can access support regardless of sharing their condition
- Reasonable adjustments: Offer flexibility for medical appointments and accommodate treatment routines
- Awareness and training: Conduct training to educate teams about HIV, its realities, and how to eliminate stigma.
- Proactive inclusion: Recognise events like World AIDS Day or conduct initiatives to raise awareness and show solidarity.
By implementing these measures, employers not only comply with legal obligations but also contribute to a broader societal effort to end the stigma surrounding HIV.
A call to action for World AIDS Day
Mark Mills, a vocal advocate for HIV inclusivity, highlights in the guide: “Employers who provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive workplace environment for employees diagnosed as living with HIV make a significant impact on the overall employee wellness journey.” On World AIDS Day, VinciWorks urges organisations to take action. Consider how your organisation can better educate your teams, and ensure your workplace is taking steps towards greater inclusivity and understanding.
