Description
In the UK, approximately 1 in 5 students in higher education report having a disability or long-term health condition. Yet, only a third of these students feel they receive the support to succeed in their studies. Despite the legal rights available to students with disabilities and long-term conditions, significant barriers remain. These range from physical obstacles in classrooms and campus facilities to difficulties in obtaining the necessary adjustments. This course explores the challenges that disabled students face in higher education and offers practical solutions to help students identify those barriers and practical strategies to manage them.
Course Objectives
- The rights that disabled students are afforded under The Equality Act 2010
- Understanding and managing the key barriers and challenges that disabled students encounter in the HE/FE experience
- Managing the barriers in accessing adjustments
- What to expect from a reasonable adjustment plan and how to get the most from it
- How students can manage their mental health as they navigate these barriers
