Wednesday 5 August 2026 | The UK’s modern slavery reporting regime could be about to change significantly.
The Immigration and Asylum Bill proposes the most substantial reform to modern slavery statements since the Modern Slavery Act 2015 was introduced. If enacted, the Bill would move the UK regime away from a largely transparency-based model and towards a more formal compliance framework.
Modern slavery statements would need to include mandatory content, be approved and signed off at senior level, include declarations of accuracy, be submitted to government, and be published within fixed deadlines. Organisations that fail to comply could face financial penalties of up to the higher of £1 million or 1% of turnover.
