Description

Most people stay quiet at work at some point, even when they have something worth saying. This course shows managers why. Drawing on Amy Edmondson’s research, it explains what psychological safety is and what it isn’t, and how ordinary responses to questions, mistakes and challenge teach teams whether speaking up is worth the risk.

Learners practise the behaviours that build psychological safety, test their judgement in realistic scenarios and rate their own habits as managers. The course uses Australian data and case studies, including PwC’s 2026 workforce survey and APRA’s inquiry into culture at the Commonwealth Bank. It also explains how psychological safety supports employers’ duties to manage psychosocial hazards under Australian work health and safety laws.

Course Objectives

  • Explain what psychological safety is and isn’t, and why silence can’t be taken as agreement
  • Apply leadership behaviours that build psychological safety, including framing the work, inviting participation and responding productively
  • Recognise team patterns that undermine psychological safety, such as groupthink, and respond to them
