Sample video from online course: ‘Cultural awareness’

About this guide

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered one of the most sacred months in Islam. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, which means they refrain from eating, drinking, and engaging in any kind of sexual activity or other physical needs during daylight hours.

The purpose of fasting during Ramadan is to help Muslims develop self-discipline, empathy, and a sense of solidarity with those who are less fortunate. It is also believed to help purify the soul, increase spirituality, and strengthen one's relationship with God.

Muslims typically break their fast at sunset with an evening meal called iftar and often gather with family and friends to share the meal together. Ramadan ends with a celebration called Eid al-Fitr, which is marked by prayer, gift-giving, and special meals.
